Joan Calloway

Joan Calloway, 95, a resident of Baker City, Oregon, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Settlers Park in Baker City. Her visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at Coles Tribute Center.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 1:00 pm at the Baker City Nazarene Church.

Joan was born May 26, 1930, in Portland to Unnar and Cleora Stevens. She attended Grade School at the Schoolhouse on the Corner of Pocahontas and Wingville Road. She was a 1947 Baker High Graduate. She worked as a Secretary for 32 years at the Baker County Extension Office.

She fell in love and married her high school sweetheart, Ralph, in 1948. They were married for 51 years. She lived most of her life at the ranch on Wingville Road, where she raised her children and was a farm girl who milked cows and raised sheep. She loved cooking, sewing, knitting, teaching 4-H, and horseback riding. One of her favorite things were the family get-togethers. She was famous for her peach cobbler, raspberry pie, and potato salad, just to name a few. Faith and love were very important parts of her life, and she was an inspiration to all.

In 2004, she reconnected with her longtime friend and coworker, George Wilder. They married in 2004 and were married for 19 years.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Ralph and George, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, step-grandson, and nieces.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Bruce Hayes, of Baker City; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Craig Conklin, of Preston, Idaho; and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Elaine Calloway, of Baker City. Stepdaughter and son-in-law, Cristy and Terry Gaertner of La Grande; stepson and daughter-in-law, Dane and Angie Wilder of Baker City. Sister and brother- in-law Sharon and Gurpreet Jalewalia of Fountain Valley, California, Sister-in-laws Betty Stevens of Dallas, Oregon, Shirley Guilliams of Baker City, and brother-in-law Robert Calloway of Irrigon, Oregon.

She is also survived by numerous loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
